Many people are familiar with some of the first words uttered by astronaut Neil Armstrong as he set foot on the Moon in 1969: “…That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. …” But not many people know that, otherwise, Armstrong’s first words were devoted to describing the Moon’s surface in great scientific detail to his colleagues on Earth. Trained in geology by NASA, Armstrong collected not just the first rocks from space, but ones that were key to transforming our understanding of the Moon, Earth, and solar system.
Now, we have an opportunity for another transformation in knowledge as a new generation gears up to explore a region of the Moon with a unique environment through NASA’s Artemis missions. In this Engage session, you will meet the Goddard scientists who are studying Moon rocks, training astronauts, helping select Artemis landing sites, and more, in preparation for conducting science at the Moon’s South Pole region.
During this Engage session, you are invited to learn more about how Artemis missions will lead to greater exploration of the Moon. Panelists include:
• Dr. Noah Petro, Project Scientist for Artemis III
• Dr. Kelsey Young - Artemis Science Flight Operations Lead
• Dr. Daniel Moriarty, Assistant Research Scientist
• Dr. Natalie Curran, Lunar Geologist
Check out the video series, "NASA Explorers: Artemeis Generation" to learn more about the panelists.
