Collections Stewardship Workshops with the NMAI Community Loans Program
4 years ago41 views
The community loans program at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) has partnered with three tribal museums and cultural centers (Poeh Cultural Center, Makah Cultural and Research Center and Nohwike Bagowa/White Mountain Apache Cultural Center and Museum) to secure long-term loans and effectively bring NMAI collections back to the communities of origin – providing ready access to collections while encouraging cultural pride, artistic inspiration and sparking diffusion of cultural knowledge from elder to younger generations. Throughout the exhibit development and loan process, these partnerships have been nurtured through a series of working sessions at the NMAI Cultural Resources Center (CRC) in Suitland, MD, as well as collections care workshops on-site at partner institutions including a registration workshop at the Poeh Cultural Center, a home care workshop at the Makah Cultural and Research Center and a storage mount workshop at Nohwike Bagowa.
