Arun Kafle, Project Director of the Food and Nutrition Security Enhancement Project (FANSEP) at Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, explores how urban and small-scale farming can serve as levers for economic, environmental, and social wellbeing. Drawing from policy experiences in Nepal, Arun highlights the potential of climate-smart, nutrition-sensitive agriculture to address food insecurity and climate risks, especially among smallholders and urban communities. He presents a three-step approach—targeting, upscaling, and monitoring—as a roadmap for action, emphasizing the role of farmer field schools, local ecosystems, and policy support. Through low-cost, scalable practices and safety net programs, Nepal is paving the way toward more resilient agrifood systems and healthier diets for all.
